Wooden privacy fencing is a beautiful addition to any property, and it helps create seclusion in the backyard. Homeowners should perform regular maintenance throughout the year to preserve the planks and keep them from rotting. If you aren’t sure where to start, use this guide to get informed.

Do:

Clear weeds and trim bushes.

A standard mower is too bulky to access the vines and grass closest to your fence, so use a weed whacker or hedge trimmer to remove them. Always remove the growth as soon as you notice it, as it can trap moisture and attract insects that will nibble on the material.

Re-seal regularly.

privacy fencingApply a fresh coat of water-resistant  and UV resistant sealant every few years to protect the fence from moisture damage as well as the harsh sun. Splash water on the material to determine if it’s time to reapply; if the wood absorbs the liquid instead of letting it bead off, it needs a new coat. To ensure the sealant adheres properly, clean the surface and let it dry thoroughly before application.

Don’t:

Power-wash carelessly.

Power washing prevents mildew growth, removes surface dirt, and prepares the wood for re-sealing. Don’t hold the head too close to the fence if you’re using a high-powered nozzle—the pressure will damage the fibers. Always reference your equipment’s user manual to determine a safe distance. Test a small corner of the material, and back up if it becomes splintered.

Let the sprinklers wet the fence.

Make sure you aren’t inadvertently exposing your privacy fencing to moisture whenever you water your grass. Excessive water exposure will damage the planks, even if they have a high-quality sealant. If sprinklers are splashing the wood, reposition them away from the material and water the surrounding grass by hand.
