If you own a vehicle, you’ll eventually have to replace its tires. Since this is expensive, many drivers want them to last as long as possible. While there’s no way to keep them from wearing down, you can slow down the rate at which they do by avoiding the bad habits below.

What Decreases the Life Span of Tires?

1. Overlooking Maintenance

To get the most out of your tires, you should rotate them every 5,000 miles or so to ensure they wear evenly. Likewise, check the owners manual or driver’s side door jamb for information about the correct inflation amount. This will tell you how many pounds per square inch (psi) of ait pressure will allow them to retain their structural integrity and prevent blowouts. Finally, realign the wheels at every tuneup to ensure they are even. This will allow for equal weight distribution across all four wheels.

2. Ignoring Surroundings

tiresIf you’re in heavy traffic, maneuvering around a pothole could be dangerous, especially if it requires you to cross into another lane. However, whenever you can avoid potholes, do so. By scanning your immediate surroundings as you drive, you can avoid many hazards that will damage your tires, including unmarked curbs and debris. This will ensure you do not require a premature replacement due to holes.

3. Riding the Brakes

Stopping short and unnecessary braking will cause undue friction on the tires, wearing out the treads quickly. To avoid the need to stop short, eliminate distractions whenever you drive, and maintain plenty of distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Generally, you should be one car length away from the other vehicle for every 10 mph you are going. Likewise, use the vehicle’s downshift option—even if your car has an automatic transmission, it may allow you to downshift manually—instead of the brakes to reduce your downhill speed.
