Waste management trucks help keep communities clean and sanitary. Drivers must be aware of these large rigs to promote safety for themselves and waste management staff. Here’s some advice on how to share the road with garbage vehicles.

How to Drive Safely Around Waste Management Trucks

1. Stay Out of the No-zones

Many driver's education courses include information about the “no-zone.” This term refers to the areas around a large vehicle that are invisible to the driver.

waste management Dale County ALTruck no-zones include the areas directly to the sides of the vehicle that aren’t visible in the rearview and side mirrors. Keep these spots in mind and avoid driving in the blind spots. Speed up if you need to pass the truck, and ensure you’re always in front of or behind the vehicles where the drivers can see you.

2. Don’t Pass to Turn in Front of a Garbage Truck

Alabama has laws about passing a stopped school or church bus to turn right directly in front of the vehicles. While garbage trucks aren’t included in this regulation, consider following the same rule with waste management vehicles. These larger rigs feature similar blind spots, and it’s safer for both parties if you wait until the truck moves forward before turning.

3. Provide Extra Room

Most states recommend waiting six seconds after a car passes to turn onto the road. This timing provides enough space for you to stop if the one in front suddenly brakes. Wait 12 seconds if you’re following a garbage truck, as it’s heavier and takes longer to stop.

4. Know the Collection Days

Some drivers grow impatient when they’re behind a waste management truck and have to wait for it to move. Avoid this minor traffic jam by knowing when your company or neighborhood is scheduled for trash collection. Factor this timing into your commute so that you can leave early or late to avoid the big rigs.
