Sinks are an essential component to the kitchen, providing direct access to the water supply and making it easier to maintain a clean environment. However, with regular use, it’s common for clogged drains and other issues to develop and disrupt your daily routine. Restore functionality by learning to recognize the indicators and securing timely service.

Common Problems With Kitchen Sinks

1. Low Pressure

Water collects minerals as it passes through the system. Over time, these catch along the inside of the aerator and reduce the pressure until it’s nothing but a trickle. You can detach this component from the head of the faucet and scrub it clean with an old toothbrush, knocking away any calcium and mineral buildup. However, if the water stream still displays low pressure, then there are internal issues with the mainline or the faucet itself.

2. Clogged Drain

clogged drainGrease, scraps, and other types of cooking residue are the lead culprits for clogged drains, building up within the pipes and preventing water flow. Watch for slow-draining water and try using a plunger to loosen the debris. If the water still pools around the opening, it might be time to call for rooter service since the buildup is likely located further down in your pipes.

3. Visible Leak

Every component features a seal to prevent water from seeping around the edges. If the material fails and corrodes, leaks will become apparent and increase the risk of damage. Check to see where the droplets are coming from before shutting off the water supply. Identifying the location and ensure it’s coming from the seal to make it easier to perform a repair.

4. Broken Disposal

Garbage disposals aren’t made to handle items like grease or vegetable peels. They can catch within the gears and cause the components to jam. Press the reset button on the underside of the sink before running cold water through the drain, which should clear out the debris and restore functionality. However, if it still doesn’t work, you might be looking at the need for a replacement.
