As a vehicle owner, you must replace your worn-out tires periodically to keep your car functional and safe. But how can you tell when it’s time for an upgrade? The following guide outlines some helpful warning signs to look out for that indicate it’s time for new tires.

How to Tell If You Need New Tires

1. They Won’t Hold Air

Many modern models feature computer sensors that indicate when your tires are low on air. When this light comes on, visit your local gas station and use the compressor to fill them up according to the recommended air per square inch (PSI).

In most cases, low tire pressure may be circumstantial; for example, if the temperature drops. As such, once you refill the tires, they should be good to go.

However, if they continue to deflate even after you’ve refilled them, they’re likely due for an upgrade. Tires stop holding air when the valve stem wears out or they sustain punctures that cause air leaks.

2. The Tread Is Worn

Check the horizontal bar feature on the tread every two months. Once the tire surface is equal to or lower than this bar, invest in a replacement.

3. The Wear Is Uneven

In some cases, the tread may wear down in some spots more than others. When you don’t rotate the tires often enough, bald spots develop that put you at risk of uneven wear.

If the tread appears uneven across the entire surface, invest in a replacement. Then aim to rotate your new set once every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.
