Nearly a third of adults aged 20 to 44 have an undiagnosed cavity, along with more than 16% of children ages 5 to 18. Fortunately, the proper dental hygiene practices combined with regular visits to the dentist can prevent cavities. If you’re concerned that you might have one, here are a few signs to watch out for.

Dental Cavity Symptoms

1. Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity can be an early sign of a cavity. Eating hot or cold foods can trigger this sensation, as can air passing over the tooth. A cavity can erode your tooth enamel, which makes the affected tooth more sensitive.

2. Toothaches

The center of your tooth, or the pulp, has nerve endings. When the enamel erodes and further exposes the pulp, those nerve endings become more sensitive, and you may experience a toothache.

If you have persistent discomfort, you might have a cavity. Since a toothache can be the result of other oral conditions, consult with a dentist to determine the source of the problem.

3. Pain With Pressure

dentistYou may also experience pain when chewing. In this instance, the added pressure of biting can place stress on a tooth already aching due to a cavity. This pain is more common when the cavity is on a molar.

4. Discoloration

A sign of advanced dental decay includes tooth discoloration. Visible dark spots indicate that bacteria has infiltrated the tooth through tiny holes and crevices. Left untreated, these dark spots can develop into holes, so prompt treatment is necessary to address the cavity.
