Snakes have unique personalities and are relatively easy to take care of, which makes them great pets for almost any household. While they may not require as much attention as dogs or birds, they do need the right environment and regular visits with a reptile veterinarian. If you’re planning on getting your first snake, below are a few facts you should know.

A Guide for Adopting a Snake

Choose the Right Species

Some species of snake require a little more care and attention than others, so do some research before choosing a pet. Corn snakes have a docile demeanor and small size. California kingsnakes also don’t get much bigger than four feet, but they do need to be handled on a regular basis. If you’re looking for something larger, consider a ball python, which is currently the most popular snake species in the country.

Besides their eventual size, also take their life span into account. If the snake is for your son or daughter, consider that you may have to take care of a long-living snake for them when they leave home.

Create the Right Environment

Find a place selling your snake’s preferred food. Some eat small rodents, like mice, while others get their nutrients from insects. You will also have to decide whether you will be feeding your snake live or frozen food and where to store this in your home.

Find a Good Reptile Veterinarian

Like any animal, snakes are vulnerable to parasites, diseases, and medical conditions. Many vets don’t have the expertise to treat illnesses specific to snakes, so research who is available in the area ahead of time. Schedule annual checkups with your reptile veterinarians, and call the doctor any time you notice any changes in their behavior or appearance.
