Forty-four percent of people admit they have exaggerated to their dentist about how often they floss. While flossing may not be the most exciting activity, it is essential for healthy teeth and gums. Daily flossing and proper form will ensure you get the most out of this practice. Here are some basic do’s and don'ts of flossing.

Do:

Use a long strand.

When using a short strand of floss, you risk reusing parts of the strand that have already been run between the teeth. The strand should be at least 18 inches long. Wind the ends around the middle or index fingers on both hands, giving yourself about two inches to work with. As you progress from one tooth to the next, unspool the strand from your fingers and respool it to expose a clean section of floss.

Be gentle.

dentistFlossing shouldn't involve aggressive or vigorous movements. Tooth plaque is much softer than you might think and doesn't require intense maneuvers to remove. Slide the floss between the teeth and glide it along the sides of each tooth. Don't snap the floss in and out of teeth. If you notice blood on the floss, you're being too forceful; take it slow.

Don't:

Stress about whether to brush or floss first.

There is no wrong answer when it comes to the age-old debate of whether one should brush before they floss or floss before they brush. Dentists agree that it is all a matter of personal taste. Do what feels most comfortable to you. It's more important that you floss, not what order you do it in.

Forget the gums.

Plaque, tartar, and bits of food can easily get stuck in the soft tissues of the gums, so don't neglect the gums while flossing. Run the floss along the gum line between each tooth. Be careful not to gouge the gums. If you're new to a daily flossing habit, it's not uncommon for the gums to bleed a little, but this will go away as the tissue strengthens.
