A hose bib is an outdoor faucet that connects to a hose. As summer approaches and you spend more time outdoors, you may notice that this fixture drips. Correcting the issue prevents waste and protects the foundation of your home from water damage. Here’s how plumbers resolve different causes of hose bib leaks.

How Plumbers Repair Leaky Hose Bibs

faucetsA leaky hose bib usually has a faulty packing string or stem washer. Before the plumber arrives, shut off the bib’s water supply to expedite the process.

To repair the leak, the plumber removes the faucet handle and valve stem. If they detect problems with the stem washer or packing string, they replace it with a new part. Once replacements are complete, the plumber may ask you to turn on the supply to test the fixture.

How Plumbers Replace Leaky Hose Bibs

If the plumber spots cracks on the hose bib, they replace the entire unit.

If the faucet is screwed on, the professional attaches locking pliers onto the hex fitting or the pipe behind the fixture. Then, they unscrew the hose bib while holding the locking pliers in place. Wrapping the exposed threads with pipe tape, they attach the replacement part to restore its functionality.

For a hose bib that’s soldered on, the plumber must use a hacksaw to remove the pipe behind the fixture. Using sandpaper, they smooth the end of the exposed pipe to create an area for the new part. They then attach locking pliers to a quick-connect adapter, screwing the new hose bib onto the adapter. After this service, the faucet should no longer leak.
