If you’re moving boxes into a storage unit, packing them carefully keeps the items inside them protected. Below is a guide to help you secure all types of belongings.

How to Efficiently Pack Items for Storage

1. Get the Right Supplies

Having enough supplies helps you prevent common problems. For example, if you don’t have sufficient boxes, you may accidentally overpack the ones you have. Without heavy-duty tape, box seams can burst open.

Before beginning, invest in new packing supplies, including bubble wrap, shipping tape, and plastic bins.

2. Assemble Boxes

If you’re using cardboard boxes, assemble them carefully before placing items inside.

To ensure the boxes hold the weight of your belongings, line up each side as evenly as possible and correct overhanging areas. Secure seams with shipping tape on both sides to keep flaps in place.

3. Protect Fragile Belongings

movingWrap breakable items, like glassware, dishes, vases, and mirrors, before placing them in boxes.

Cover each piece individually in bubble wrap, packing paper, blankets, or towels. Pad the space between loose objects so they don’t knock into each other as you transport the boxes. Use soft padding for items with sharp edges, including mirrors and antique silverware.

4. Keep Boxes Light

Overstuffing boxes makes them too heavy to transport. If you use cardboard varieties, the flaps may also give under the excess weight.

Use smaller boxes for heavier belongings, including books and appliances, and leave the bigger ones for lightweight objects. If small boxes get too heavy but still have empty room, fill the spaces with packing materials to prevent items from shifting around.

5. Add Labels

Without a clear label on each box, you won’t know what possessions are inside, which makes finding belongings in storage difficult.

Clearly write the contents of each box on all sides using permanent markers. Alternatively, place labels on plastic bins. Label any containers as fragile if they contain delicate belongings.
