The dryer is a convenient home appliance, and it’s nice when one comes with the house you move into. However, the machine will experience normal wear over time, and it’ll need to be replaced eventually. If you’re noticing any of the following issues, it may be time to consider upgrading to a new one.

How Will I Know If I Need a New Dryer?

1. Refuses to Start

This issue is typically caused by a malfunctioning door sensor, as the machine will think it’s still open even when it isn’t. If you’ve replaced the sensor and still experience the issue, your appliance may have a problem with its electrical wiring. Since it can be costly to rewire the dryer, it’s likely cheaper and faster to replace the entire machine.

2. Dries Slowly

dryerIf you need to run the machine several times to dry a small load, the appliance may have a failing heating coil or thermal fuse. Continuing to operate the machine with these issues forces you to run more cycles and increases the cost of monthly electric bills. You’ll also spend additional funds on the repairs, so it’s more cost-efficient to replace the appliance altogether.

3. Makes Noise

While most dryers hum when working, the sound shouldn’t be too noticeable. Loud squealing, squeaking, or thumping from the appliance indicate problems with the drive belt, idler pulley, or drum support rollers and shaft. These essential components are costly to fix, so it may be cheaper to replace the unit entirely.

4. Emits Odors

If you notice a burning smell during a cycle, check the lint trap because the fibers may ignite under heat. If the trap is empty, you likely have a broken hose duct, vent, or electrical component. These problems create a fire hazard whenever the machine is used. The repairs tend to be costly due to high labor and material prices, so just put those funds toward a new investment.
