Finding a good contractor is important.  A home improvement project gone wrong can really end up costing you.  Find out how to hire the right contractor for your project and set terms that keep both of you accountable and pleased with your final outcome.

 Do Your Research

How many years has the company been in business?  Do they look professional?  Check the contractors credentials and qualifications.  Be sure to ask for proof of insurance and current license.  Check out references from trusted sites.  This will assure you of their work ethic and past customers experiences.

Get a Written Contract

Get everything in writing and be sure to read the fine print.  Keep a project folder and make notes.  If there are any questions that arise during the project you will be able to refer to your documentation.

No Money Down

While some reputable contractors require “money down”, most do not.  Be cautious when asked for money upfront to begin the project.  Asking for money in advance is often a sign of a contractor scam.  Also, never pay for the completed work before it is finished.  A reputable contractor will ask for balance in full when the project is complete and you are completely satisfied with their work.

Hire Local

Hire a local contractor when possible.  Talk to your friends, family and neighbors.  Has anyone heard of the contractor or business?  If they are from out of town or state, who will handle warranty claims or repair issues should you need them?  Check out the contractor with your local Better Business Bureau for a rating and reviews.

Ask Questions

There are no wrong questions, only wrong answers.  Ask questions about the company, your contract and how the project will be completed.  Most importantly,  hold the contractor accountable for the answers. If they don't answer or become defensive, look for another company to complete your project.

Don't Rush

If it sounds too good to be true, chances are it is!  Listen to those warning bells going off in your head and go with your gut.  Don’t allow the contractor to rush you into signing a contract that you don’t understand or haven’t read through carefully.  Take your time deciding which contractor to choose.
