swimming pool is an excellent home addition, providing ample opportunity for exercising as well as entertaining guests. But without proper maintenance, it can become more of a liability than an asset. Ensure that your swimming pool is in excellent condition—no matter the season—using the following tips.

Do:

Shock it frequently.

Shocking is a disinfection technique that involves pouring three to five times the usual amount of chlorine into the swimming pool. It inhibits the growth of organic matter in the water caused by nitrogen and ammonia. For frequently used pools, aim to shock the water once a week; otherwise, twice a month is acceptable.

Keep in mind that chlorine remains the most effective deterrent against bacteria and contamination. Apply chlorine at night for optimal efficiency and always mix the chemical in a separate bucket of water before pouring.

Keep pH levels balanced.

While chlorine is needed to disinfect the pool, an excessive amount of it can cause the water to become acidic, which may damage pool components like the pump, filters, vinyl liner, and automatic pool cleaner.

On the other hand, excessive alkalinity encourages scale formation that makes the water cloudy, stains surfaces, and clogs filters with buildup. Every week, test the pH levels and aim for a reading of 7.5.

Don’t:

Forget to cover when unused.

Many people forget to cover their swimming pool when it’s not in use. However, it’s a simple task that keeps out unwanted debris, such as dirt, leaves, insects, and other organisms that can cause algae blooms and clog the pool drain. If you don’t already have a cover, invest in one, especially if you don’t plan to use the swimming pool for a while.

Skip regular cleanings.

Brush hard-to-reach spots, such as behind ladders, corners, crevices, water lines, and steps. Use pool cleaner when scrubbing off the dirt and keep the garden hose away from the pool while cleaning. If it’s too much work for you to do yourself, hire professionals to get the job done thoroughly.
