Even a tidy home isn’t immune to spiders. As such, you may come across cobwebs during your house cleaning routines. Here’s how to prevent or treat these inconvenient eyesores.

Why Does Your Home Have Cobwebs?

Since spiders love cool, shadowy spots, they may be drawn to many places in your home. For example, it’s common for them to crawl into seldom-used areas, such as the basement or attic.

They’ll feel around the corners and ceiling to see if the structure is strong enough to string a cobweb between the walls, beams, nooks, or crannies. Unless they’re taken down while you’re house cleaning, cobwebs often remain in place for many years after the spider leaves or dies, gathering the dust, dirt, dander, and debris that float into their threads.

How Can You Prevent or Deal With Them?

It’s easy to clean cobwebs during your regular house cleaning routine, or if you’ve recently relocated and need to do move-in cleaning. Simply vacuum the cobwebs with an extension nozzle.

In addition to cleaning corners, beams, and small wall openings, check for cobwebs in every cool and dark space that comes to mind. This may include blinds, curtains, and any furniture pushed against corners or walls.

To discourage spiders from making cobwebs in the first place, caulk any cracks and gaps that you may find in your walls, windows, and doors so that they can’t crawl inside. If you find a spider in your home, consider spraying these openings with insecticide or mixtures of peppermint, lemon, or eucalyptus oil.

Get rid of as much clutter as possible so that they have fewer objects from which to hang their threads. Potted plants should also be set a few feet away from the walls, if possible, since spiders are attracted to them.
