If you drive a semi-truck and do not pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) test because of drugs or alcohol, you must undergo a rigorous process before returning to work. Part of this entails working with a substance abuse professional (SAP) in a DOT SAP program to ensure proper rehabilitation and treatment. Below are a few aspects to remember if you cannot work due to testing positive or refusing to take a drug test.

DOT SAP Evaluation & Treatment

As soon as the positive drug or alcohol test comes back, the employer must immediately prohibit the driver from working. At this point, the driver will receive a list of substance abuse personnel that can evaluate and treat them. This evaluation is necessary to refer the driver to an appropriate rehab program to address their substance abuse issues.

Follow-Up Evaluation & Report

DOT SAPPost-treatment, the driver will undergo another evaluation by the same DOT SAP professional. If the driver completes treatment successfully, they will either return to safety-sensitive function or receive further treatment. Safety-sensitive functions are professions with responsibility for another’s safety and well-being. If the procedure is unsuccessful, subsequent evaluations are necessary. The DOT SAP must also file additional reports listing further recommendations, when applicable.

Return-to-Duty Test

Before the employee can resume working, they must provide a negative return-to-duty drug test. To ensure proper conduct, a counselor will administer the test and observe the process. Additionally, all drivers are subject to at least six drug and alcohol tests within the year after returning. The employee will not know when they must take these tests, as they are random.
