An abscess is a common but often painful infection that can affect teeth and gums. It has numerous potential causes, and it’s potentially dangerous if not quickly remedied. With the help of a dentist, an abscess will be treated within a few appointments.

What Is an Abscess?

At the center of every tooth is a soft pulp consisting of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It provides sensory information by alerting you when a food or beverage is too hot or cold. The pulp also can form dentin, which is a protective layer of the tooth. If the dentin becomes damaged, the pulp can form secondary dentin to protect the tooth. Since the pulp is full of blood vessels, the continuous flow of blood prevents the tooth from becoming brittle and malnourished.

An abscess forms when the pulp dies and becomes inflamed. As a result, the affected tooth will become sensitive when chewing or when exposed to hot or cold food or beverages.

If the abscess ruptures, there will be a bad taste along with a draining sore in the mouth.

Toothaches are also common. Since the pain throbs and often radiates to the ear, jaw, and neck, sourcing which tooth is causing the pain can be difficult. The face, cheeks, and gums may also swell.

While a ruptured abscess might relieve the pain, the infection can still spread to the jaw.

What Causes an Abscess?

Untreated cavities, lodged food, and cracked or broken teeth or fillings can cause an abscess. However, they’re most commonly caused by advanced gum disease or untreated tooth decay.

DentistThe enamel protects teeth from bacteria. Over time, tooth decay erodes that enamel, while cracked and broken teeth allow the bacteria to access the pulp.

The body responds by sending white blood cells to fight the bacteria, creating pus comprised of the dead tissue, bacteria, and white blood cells. With limited room inside the affected tooth, the body tries to drain the excess material from the root tip in the jaw. This causes a pus pocket to form, creating the abscess.

What Treatments Are Available?

Dentists usually treat abscesses with an endodontic surgery or a root canal. They will remove the bacteria from tooth, while also cleaning, shaping, and then sealing it. After a few days, you’ll return for another appointment. Your dentist will place a crown or filling to restore the tooth properly. Once installed, you’ll be able to chew and speak as you usually did and without any pain.
