Flat tires aren’t always a big deal, but they can cause a scary situation if you have one while driving on the freeway. It’s important to prepare yourself for this scenario in order to enforce the safety of yourself and others. A flat tire doesn’t have to be a reason to panic when you handle the situation properly. Here are some tips for what to do and not do if your tire gives out.

Do:

Slow down.

If you notice you have a flat tire, do not brake abruptly. This could cause a rear-end collision. It’s much safer to gradually slow your speed. Grip your steering wheel tightly and take your foot off of the gas pedal. Steer to a place off-road while braking gently.

Find a safe area.

Your goal is to park your car in a flat, stable, and traffic-free area. Guide your car to the breakdown lane. If you’re able, increase your safety by pulling your vehicle completely off the road and into the grass.

Driving a short distance with a flat tire is typically safe. Use your signal when changing lanes and don’t make any sudden movements as you get to the side of the road.

Don’t:

Ignore other drivers.

Wave something white out the window of your car or hang it from your antenna. These indicators will also alert any passing emergency responders or tow trucks.

Leave your car.

Aside from setting up emergency indicators, it’s best to stay inside the car. If, for some reason, you’re unable to remain in your vehicle, do not stand next to or behind it. Walk a safe and lengthy distance away from your car and the road to keep you out of harm’s way.
