A dryer is a major appliance to make laundry day more convenient. If you are investing in a new one and want to avoid dryer repair, there are a few key steps to follow. Below are some do’s and don’ts to remember.

Do:

Clean it

dryer repairLint must always be removed to keep your dryer in top shape. Clean the lint screen and moisture sensors to remove any residue left behind by dryer sheets. Wipe down sensors inside the dryer drum with a clean towel and mild soap, and rinse the lint screen. Air-dry it before putting it back inside. Make sure the lint trap is cleared with every load and use a lint brush to get inside where the trap sits.

Prepare each load

Make sure pockets are clear of coins, pens, crayons, and other objects that can damage or leak on clothing. Zip zippers so the teeth don’t tear fabric as they tumble. Removing objects also eliminates anything banging around your dryer drum and damaging any internal components.

Clean the vent pipe

Lint also gets into the dryer vent pipe, and an annual cleaning is necessary. The vent can be cleaned with a vacuum, especially if the line is short and the tubing is solid, or you may need to call in a dryer repair expert for longer, accordion lines. Not only does this ensure proper airflow for more efficient loads, but it also reduces the risk of a dryer fire since lint is quite flammable.

Don’t:

Forget the dryer area

Make sure the floor around your dryer is clear of debris and dust. Your equipment uses the air around it to function and will run much more efficiently for longer if there is nothing in the way.

Avoid sorting

Separate your laundry by fabric types. Keep rough fabrics away from delicate ones as this can degrade them and cause pilling. Different materials are also better at certain temperatures, and using the wrong heat level can lead to shrinkage. Some items should also be removed sooner than others to prevent damage and overdrying.

Overload

Clothing should have plenty of space to tumble in the drum. Avoid stuffing too much into a cycle so each piece dries thoroughly and is less wrinkled. Also shake out each piece before putting inside, which helps with wrinkles and removes some moisture so the dryer doesn’t overwork and can run at optimal cycle settings.
