A solar water heater uses a solar thermal collector to convert sunlight to heat, which warms your water. Because it creates renewable energy, it will reduce your carbon footprint and monthly utility costs. To enjoy these benefits for years to come, use these maintenance tips to keep your water heater in good condition.

How to Maintain a Solar Water Heater

1. Check Storage Tank & Inside Elements

Cold water moves from the storage tank to the solar collector through a series of pipes, pumps, and valves. The water then returns to the tank.

To ensure the water makes a safe round-trip journey, check the components: all fittings should be secured tightly, and valves and pumps should move automatically. Examine the controls for wiring issues and the tank itself for cracks or damage.

Inspect your system at least twice a year, and call a professional promptly to address leaks or inefficient heating.

2. Prevent Scaling

As a result, the piping may clog and the system may work inefficiently. If left untreated, scaling can lead to valve and pump failure.

To prevent scaling, run an acidic solution like vinegar through your system every three to five years, or more often, depending on the water hardness. Alternatively, you can use a water softener.

3. Look Out for System Changes

Pay attention to changes in your system, such as low water temperature or a lack of hot water altogether. You might have an element failure; by noticing it early, you can get a technician to look at it promptly and prevent further damage.

Additionally, if your solar water heater seems low on energy, make sure that overgrown trees aren’t blocking the panels. Have any nearby branches trimmed regularly.
