Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies help cover any gaps in Original Medicare Parts A and B coverage. Upon your 65th birthday, you have a six-month window (Medigap Open Enrollment) to enroll in a Medigap plan with guaranteed acceptance.  This is your Open Enrollment Period which has nothing to do with the Annual Enrollment Period for Advantage and Prescription Drug plans. Also, if you have delayed enrolling in Part B because of employer health coverage based on your (or your spouse’s) current employment, you won’t be able to apply for a Medigap plan until you sign up for Part B and you have a 6-month period from the date it becomes effective to enroll with “guaranteed issue” (no underwriting).   However, beyond that timeframe, enrolling in or changing Medigap plans becomes more complicated. Here's what you need to know.

When Can Medigap Policies Be Changed?

Initially, you have a 30-day free look period and can change if you’re not satisfied. Otherwise, you can also obtain a new plan after your six-month open enrollment period is over. Then, you can get a new plan if your current plan is terminated by the insurer through no fault of your own.  You're also guaranteed Medigap coverage if you signed up for a Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time less than 12 months ago but would like to return to Original Medicare and pick up a Medigap plan instead.

Even if you don't fall into the two approved categories (New to Medicare and/or Part B or Special Circumstances), you can still switch policies. However, the decision is entirely dependent on the insurance company and its underwriting process. As a result, there’s a risk of being denied due to pre-existing health conditions or past ailments.

How to Switch Plans

After selecting a Medicare Supplement policy that matches your needs, you need to follow the insurance company's application process. This step is required whether you fall into a guaranteed situation or not. Again, upon being approved, you have 30 days to try out the plan.  It’s helpful to have the assistance of an agent/broker to guide you.

During the "free-look period," policyholders are responsible for covering both plans' monthly premiums—the current Medigap policy and the new one. If you're happy with the new coverage at the end of the time frame, contact your past provider to cancel the old plan. If you're unsatisfied with the new policy, it can be canceled.
