Whether you’re repaving a driveway or installing a walkway or patio, few materials for the job are as suitable as ready-mix concrete. Unfortunately, like many summer home improvement projects, concrete pouring is challenging due to the hot conditions. Below are several strategies to successfully cure concrete in the heat.

How to Cure Ready-Mix Concrete in Summer

1. Use the Correct Mix

Concrete sets quicker in the heat, which can compromise the finished product’s strength. Retarding admixtures can slow the setting process, as they prevent the heat from absorbing into the wet concrete, allowing it to set correctly. When using a mix with a retardant, you must wait extra time for the concrete to cure.

2. Use Cool Water

ready mix concreteConcrete typically contains water to keep it moist and liquid until you finish the job. However, it may evaporate in the sunlight on a hot day. If you can’t keep your mixture out of the sun, use cold water to cool it. If you’re concerned about the water heating too quickly, add ice to the mix. Dampen the side forms for slabs or walls and the subgrade, as well. This ensures that all parts cool evenly.

3. Keep Equipment in the Shade

Until you are ready to use it, all tools, aggregate, and supplies should be out of the sun. Otherwise, hot items such as spades, mixers, pumping hoses, and tamping bars may heat the concrete while you’re pouring it. Aggregate—the primary ingredient in ready-mix concrete—should be out of the sun, as well. Like machinery, it can absorb significant heat in direct sunlight, making the overall concrete mixture hotter.

4. Get an Evaporative Cooler

For large jobs, consider investing in an evaporative cooler. These monomolecular films cover the aggregate and prevent moisture from evaporating too quickly, preventing shrinkage cracking. However, they will evaporate after a couple of hours, and you may need to reapply it if the job is still ongoing. They will not adversely affect the final product.
