Sciatica pain typically follows the path of the sciatic nerve, which travels through the hips and buttocks from the lower back down to the legs. This pain normally only affects one side of the body, and it occurs when bones or disks compress the nerve, resulting in inflammation, pain, and swelling. Fortunately, many people find pain relief by performing certain stretching exercises. Below are some you should try.

What Are Some Stretching Exercises That Can Relieve Sciatica Pain?

1. Reclining Pigeon Pose

Lie on the floor with your legs outstretched in front of you. Bend your legs and place the ankle of one leg on the knee of the other. Then, slowly pull your knee toward your chest until you can feel your glutes and lower back muscles begin to stretch. Hold the pose for 15 seconds, and then switch legs. Perform three to five reps of both stretches.

2. Knee-to-Chest Pose

Pull the knee toward your chest until you feel the muscles in your lower back and buttocks start to stretch. Hold the knee to your chest for 20 seconds, and then release. Repeat with the other leg and perform three to five repetitions of each stretch.

3. Hamstring Stretch

Cross one leg over the other or place one foot on an elevated surface. With your hands on your hips, bend forward at the waist until you feel tension in the muscle of the rear leg. Keep your back straight and hold the position for ten seconds before switching legs. Repeat the sequence of stretching both legs three or four times. If you experience sharp pain, cease the exercise to avoid injury.
