Hawaii is known for warm, sunny weather and fragrant sea breezes. While these might be pleasant conditions for residents, they aren’t always kind to electrical services. In some cases, humidity can damage wiring and other crucial components. Here’s how the science works and what you can do to prevent moisture-related complications.

How Does Humidity Affect Electrical Systems?

When warm, humid air touches a cold surface, the water in it condenses. This can lead to condensation inside your metal electrical enclosures and is especially common in breaker boxes located in garages or outdoor outlet enclosures.

Unfortunately, once the condensation forms, the enclosed space makes it almost impossible for the beads to evaporate. Excessive condensation can lead to a short circuit, which increases the risk of electrocution or electrical fire.

How Can It Be Prevented?

Indoors, you can protect outlets and cables from condensation by installing a dehumidifier and keeping moisture levels under 60%. You might also need to bulk up insulation to protect the wiring inside your walls.

In sunrooms and other transitional spaces, weatherproof outlets to block out the humid outdoor air. If you have any GFCI outlets on exterior walls, make sure the boxes around them close properly and are airtight.
