Appliqué can elevate the appearance of your quilt design, plus the fusible technique is both easy and enjoyable to master. It involves using a paper-backed adhesive with two sides to connect your chosen appliqués to your fabric. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that it adds value and beauty to many of your creations! Here are some tips to help you.

How to Use the Fusible Technique for Appliqués

1. Cut Inside the Lines

After you trace your desired pattern onto the smooth side of the paper-backed material, it’s time to cut the pieces for transfer. While you might think to cut directly on the traced lines, it’s more helpful to cut inside the shape instead. Since the opening will be smaller within the lines, not as much adhesive will be used. The result is a softer and more pliable appliqué that is easier to transfer.

2. Use the Right Temperature

Kihei, HI quilt designTo fuse the pattern, you’ll need to use an iron. Though manufacturers provide specific instructions, pay attention to the temperature setting as you press. If it gets too hot, it could burn the adhesive and render the paper useless. If it’s not warm enough, it won’t melt the glue. Opt for a medium-range temperature.

3. Create Guides on the Fabric

Once you’ve cut your appliqué and are ready to transfer it to the fabric, assess how you’re going to place it accurately in your quilt design, especially since you likely need to complete several blocks for the finished product. For best results, create guiding lines vertically and horizontally on your fabric by pressing it with an iron. When you’re done, the fabric should have four visible square sections, which will help you find the optimal placement for your appliqué.
