Like many large home appliances, your clothes dryer has a singular purpose: to dry your clothes. While items like comforters, thick towels, and heavy coats can take more than one cycle to fully dry, on average, a single cycle should suffice, especially if you’re using the appropriate settings. If you notice most of your clothes are still damp, you may need to do more than adjust the temperature and duration—you may need dryer repair. To understand if this is the case, here is what you need to know.

3 Reasons Your Dry Isn’t Drying Your Clothes

1. Clogged Lint Trap

A common cause of damp clothing is a dirty lint trap. If it’s clogged, it’s difficult for the hot air and moisture to flow freely through the clothes and out of the machine.

Emptying it after every load is the easiest way to restore the appliance. Aside from promoting adequate airflow, a clean lint trap also prevents the chances of a fire breaking out.

2. Broken Internal Components

Sometimes, especially after a few years, the internal heating element can wear out and stop working entirely. Alternatively, it could be that the drive belt has stretched out or cracked—this component fits around the drum and helps it rotate.

Unfortunately, unlike the previous issue, these can’t be solved with basic troubleshooting. You’ll need a dryer repair technician to diagnose the problem, determine the correct replacement piece, and install it.

3. Power Problems

Finally, the issue may not be directly related to the appliance itself. If a dryer repair technician determines that the components are functional, then the electrical supply may be the problem. Using insufficient or improper voltage can get it to start, but it won’t heat up properly.

It’s important to note that if your dryer relies on gas for its heat, that could also be the issue. Due to the dangers inherent in electrical wiring and gas supply lines, leave the diagnosis and solutions to a professional.
