Stone kitchen countertops can last for decades with proper care. To mitigate daily wear and tear, learn about some of the ways you might inadvertently damage your counters.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid to Safeguard Stone Countertops?

1. Acidic Cleaners

Many stone kitchen countertops are porous, making them vulnerable to stains and etching from acidic cleaners like bleach, vinegar, or lemon juice. Look for products specifically made for stone instead.

2. Spills

Kitchen countertop Hilo HiStone absorbs moisture and stains from water, juice, tea, and coffee. Always wipe up spills immediately to prevent unsightly markings.

Use a damp cloth with soapy water to mitigate sticky residue and limit discoloration. Wipe the counter with a wet rag immediately after to remove any soapy residue that might dull the material.

3. Significant Weight

Stone is durable but can crack or even break under extensive weight. The counter can likely withstand a pot full of water, but don’t place a bag with a bowling ball on the edge of the counter.

4. Cutting

Though stone counters are hard and dense, they can incur damage if you cut foods on their surface. The resulting scratches can then harbor bacteria from meat and produce, potentially making you sick from using the counter as a food prep space. Use cutting boards instead.

5. Heat

Don’t place hot cookware directly on the kitchen countertops. Sealed stone can withstand high heat, but it’s possible to leave a mark as the sealer thins out over time. Use a potholder or a trivet to safeguard the stone before placing something hot on the counter.
