You’ve invested a lot of money and time choosing the right equipment for your business. One of the best ways to protect it, along with all the contents in your company’s garage, is to install a pair of steel garage doors. Read on to learn why you should consider adding these durable barriers to your building.

A Brief Guide to Steel Garage Doors

The Benefits of Steel Garage Doors

Though garage doors come in a variety of materials—including wood and fiberglass—steel doors have an unbeatable strength that stands up to cracking, denting, and inclement weather. They can also be insulated, protecting your equipment from temperature fluctuations and extreme climates. Plus, you’ll feel extra safe with steel doors since they have less weak spots than those made of other materials, offering additional security against break-ins. Some steel doors are fire-rated, too, which means they’ve been manufactured and tested to resist smoke and flames.

But having the strength of steel doesn’t mean your garage doors have to look like steel. This material can be customized with a variety of colors, finishes, and window paneling, so you can create a look that matches your business’ exterior and aesthetic.

What to Know Before Installing Steel Doors

If you’re shopping for steel doors, there are a couple of factors to consider. One is strength: when browsing doors, you may notice the steel listed has a specific gauge. Gauge is the measure of thickness: the lower the gauge, the thicker and stronger your steel will be. Be sure to choose a gauge that will be sturdy enough for your needs.

The other factor to consider is insulation. If you’re opting for insulated doors, you’ll want to keep an eye on the “R-Value,” which indicates the level of insulation: the higher the R-Value, the more insulated the doors will be. Take note of the type of insulation offered, which will be either polystyrene or polyurethane. Polyurethane is a foam injected into the doors. While polyurethane provides better insulation, it isn’t fire rated. Polystyrene, though of lesser quality, has the added benefit of being fire rated.
