Due to a lack of interest, some students might not put as much effort into math class and tutoring sessions. As kids need to understand one concept before moving on to the next, merely memorizing the material can lead to difficulty down the line. To encourage your child to pay attention during class and tutoring time, below are a few interesting anecdotes to pique their interest in math.

3 Fun Math Facts

1. “Zero” Doesn’t Have a Roman Numeral Equivalent

From clock faces to book chapters, Roman numerals are featured in various places. When you explain what the symbols mean to your child, mention that “zero” isn’t included in the Roman numeral system. The reason goes back to why the system was developed in the first place. It was used for record-keeping so merchants could keep track of the price of goods and inventory for trading. This made the concept of zero irrelevant. Instead of representing zero as a symbol, Romans used the Latin word for none, “nulla,” instead.

2. “Four” Is a Special Number

tutoringWhen your child spells out numbers, they might be interested to know that only one has the same number of letters as itself. “Four” is the only number in the decimal system that is spelled with an equivalent number of letters. When your youngster uses a calculator to do homework, tell them to type “4” to see four bars appear on the screen.

3. Examples of the Fibonacci Sequence Are Everywhere

During tutoring sessions and math class, your child might learn about the Fibonacci Sequence. Developed by mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci, the next number in the sequence is the sum of the two numbers that precede it. This is represented by the equation Xn+2= Xn+1 + Xn. The geometry of how flower petals form and the yearly birthrate of rabbits are two examples of the Fibonacci Sequence found in nature.

To build upon concepts learned during math classes and tutoring sessions, enroll your child in the common core programs offered by JEI Learning Center South San Jose.
