Do you feel like you don’t have the time for brushing and flossing your teeth? If so, you’re not alone; many people opt to forgo this daily routine. You may want to reconsider, however, as not brushing and flossing daily can lead to cavities and several other problems, including gum disease and tooth loss.

Anchorage, AK dentist, J. Bryson McBratney has been providing excellent dental care and advice to patients of all ages for 33 years. Here, Dr. McBratney shares the best techniques for brushing and flossing:

  • Use The Best Tools: A soft toothbrush with rounded bristles is best for great dental care. Remember to use fluoride toothpaste.
  • Easy Does It: Brush all inner and outer tooth surfaces using gentle, short, circular strokes. Hold the bristles at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and make sure to gently brush that as well. Brush chewing surfaces straight on, being kind to tooth enamel.

  • Never Neglect The Tongue: Bacteria can remain in taste buds so brush the tongue for a clean mouth and fresh breath.
  • Flossing Basics: Use about 18” of floss and wind most of it around the middle finger of one hand and the rest around the middle finger of the other hand. Slide it between your teeth making a “C” shape as your wrap it around one tooth, then gently pull the floss upward from the gum line to the top of the tooth. As you move from one tooth to the next, unroll and use a fresh section of floss. Remember to floss the back of each tooth as well!

Remember to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day; add extra sessions after sugary treats. In addition to brushing and flossing, twice-a-year professional teeth cleanings are crucial to maintaining good oral health.
