On any given day, 18-wheelers, semi-trailers, and other heavy-duty vehicles travel across the country. As each logs thousands of miles each year, they need preventive maintenance to stay in top shape. While towing and auto repair assist if you experience a breakdown, you can often avoid malfunctions with maintenance. If you drive a commercial vehicle, have a mechanic inspect these elements before each trip so you can arrive at your destination safely and on time.

Which Parts to Check on a Heavy-Duty Truck Before a Trip

1. Brakes

Have a mechanic inspect the standard and parking brakes for any signs of damage. They should check the brake’s lining for cracks, holes, and thinning.

The air pressure system should have no leaks, with levels at the recommended thresholds. A professional must also ensure proper alignment of the pushrod strokes of each brake chamber.

2. Fluids

Overheating and engine failure can occur on the road if a truck’s fluids are dirty or the levels low. Use each component’s dipstick to check the engine oil, coolant, and antifreeze for proper levels.

If the undercarriage leaves any stains on the pavement when you park, have a mechanic look for leaks.

3. Tires

Each tire’s weight rating and pounds per square inch (PSI) thresholds should match the Department of Transportation inspection requirements.

4. Electrical System

To ensure the electrical system is functional, look for loose or damaged connections in the battery cables. Have a professional clean any corrosion around the terminals.

All wires, including those in the alternator, should be free of fraying. If any are disconnected or touching the fuel lines, have the mechanic service the vehicle.
