Riding a motorcycle is an exciting way to travel, whether you use the bike to commute to work or just ride for fun on the weekends. Driving comes with risks, though, and when you’re a new rider, you need to take extra safety precautions. Once you’ve secured a license and motorcycle insurance, here are some tips for safe traveling.

How to Practice Motorcycle Safety

1. Choose the Right Motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle that’s too large or powerful for you to handle can increase the risk of an accident. When shopping for a bike, choose one that’s properly sized.

You should be able to easily find balance and hold the bike up with both feet flat on the ground when seated and easily reach the handlebars and controls. A good rule of thumb is that if the motorcycle feels too heavy, it probably is. Look for bikes with extra safety features, like anti-lock brakes.

2. Wear Protective Gear

New York requires motorcyclists to wear helmets and protective eyewear while riding. To reduce your risk of injury in a crash, always wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a jacket, preferably leather or one designed for motorcycling. New riders should consider wearing brightly colored gear to be more visible to other motorists.

3. Take a Class

4. Avoid Inclement Weather

Riding in poor weather can be dangerous, so if the forecast calls for heavy rain or wind, save your ride for another day. If you have to ride in the rain, go slow and remember that the most dangerous time is right after the precipitation starts. In most cases, it’s better to pull off the road and wait for the storm to pass.

5. Be Defensive

In a majority of motorcycle insurance accident claims, it’s not the motorcyclist who is at fault, but the driver of a car. Even so, you should practice defensive driving by not tailgating, leaving plenty of stopping distance, and paying attention to what’s happening around you.
