This summer, you’ll need your home’s central air conditioning to keep you comfortable and cool. However, before you rely on your heating and cooling system, it’s essential to make sure it is in good shape. Here are a few steps to prepare your AC system for the upcoming season.

An AC Maintenance Guide for Homeowners

1. Change the Filter

The air filter prevents dust, pet hair, and other debris from entering the heating and cooling system. When the filter is dirty, debris will accumulate and block airflow, requiring the system to work harder and reducing efficiency.

Filters also preserve indoor air quality by preventing particles from circulating throughout the home. The frequency with which you clean or change the filters will depend on a few factors. As a rule of thumb, filters should be cleaned monthly and changed at the beginning of each season. However, if you have pets or someone in the household has allergies, the filter may need to be replaced more often.

2. Remove Obstructions

heating and coolingThe heating and cooling system’s outdoor component is designed to vent warm air out of your house. As plants and trees grow in the summer, they may infringe on the unit, causing clogs or getting stuck in the grates. Cut back greenery two feet to ensure clearance on all sides and promote airflow.

3. Clean the Vents

The vents also need to be clear to ensure adequate airflow. You can hose down the outdoor unit and use a dry cloth to wipe down the indoor component. If the interior vents are particularly dirty, use a damp cloth to wash them. Make sure the indoor vents are unobstructed by clutter and furniture as well.

4. Clear the Drain

Your air conditioner contains a refrigerant that cools the air. The refrigerant moves through a condenser coil, producing condensation as the air changes temperature. This condensation is collected in a drip pan and disposed of through a drain line. The drain line can get clogged or develop mold and algae. Check the drain line for blockages and use a thin brush to clean it. You can also pour a cup of hot water or white vinegar through the drain line to combat mold and algae growth.
