In 2020, letting a car sit for a long period of time isn’t as unusual as it normally would be. However, a vehicle is meant to be driven regularly, so ignoring it while sheltering in place may result in needing the attention of an auto mechanic. Whether you’re working from home for a while longer or preparing to return to the office after a couple of months away, it’s helpful to know how not driving affects your vehicle.

Problems That May Arise

Like a human body, cars require regular movement to stay in good shape. When left to rest for extended periods of time, any of the following may occur:

  • Without being charged regularly by the alternator, the car’s battery will gradually die.

  • Moisture, dust, and debris may accumulate inside the gas and oil tanks, causing corrosion or general dirtiness that decreases fuel efficiency and clogs up the oil filter.

  • Tires continue to lose air whether they’re rolling on pavement or not. If you don’t take them to a gas station or auto mechanic to be pumped, they’ll deflate.

If the car was already in poor condition or you hadn’t had a tuneup in a while before the coronavirus pandemic swept the country, most of these issues may develop faster than they would in a more robust car.

How to Prevent or Resolve Issues

auto mechanicCars that are in good condition may only need to be started and driven once every couple of weeks. A vehicle that’s more than 10 years old will benefit from making a weekly trip. Either way, take it up to at least 50 mph for about 20 minutes to give it plenty of exercise. Top off the gas tank and pump air into the tires while you’re out.

Check to see whether it needs an oil change if it’s been six months since the last one. After opening the hood, find the oil stick—usually brightly colored or labeled—and pull it out. Clean it with a towel and put it back in. Next, pull it out once again and look at the oil level. If it’s between the two marks on either end of the stick, replenishment isn’t necessary. However, have a mechanic change it anyway if it appears dark or dirty.
