When you see a small critter scurry quickly across your yard or home, you might wonder what it was that you just saw. Mice and rats have many similar features, so it can be hard to distinguish them at first glance. Fortunately, they also have distinct differences you can look out for. Knowing how to differentiate these rodents will make it easier for your exterminator when they arrive on the scene.

Physical Differences

Mice and rats certainly share similar physical characteristics, including their coloring. However, there are subtle differences between them that allow you to distinguish between these rodents.

Check for the ears. Mice have large ears, while rats have smaller ears. Also, a mouse’s tail is long, thin, and covered in tiny hairs. A rat will have a thicker, hairless tail. Mice are typically significantly smaller than rats and have smaller feet, as well.

Behavioral Differences

exterminatorIf you suspect you have a rodent in your home, their behaviors might help you determine what it is. Mice are more likely to wreak havoc in your home. They’re curious and adventurous, which means they’ll likely be attracted to a trap. If you set one out and it remains empty, change its location. If you still fail to catch anything, you may be dealing with a rat instead. Rats are more cautious and are less likely to explore a trap and get caught.

Differences In Droppings

These rodents have different droppings as well. Droppings are often the first clue you need to call an exterminator. Mouse droppings are usually smaller and feature pointed ends. Rat droppings are larger and banana-shaped. Mice typically have more droppings than rats, leaving behind up to 80 a day, compared to a rat’s 40.
