As a dog owner, making sure your furry friend has a place to run and play is essential when purchasing a home. After a residential property survey, you might learn that the property doesn’t have fences on the boundary lines. If you don’t want a barrier blocking the beautiful scenery, you can teach your pet about invisible boundaries and ensure they stay out of trouble.

How to Teach a Dog About Invisible Boundaries

1. Mark the Boundaries

Your dog must learn where the boundaries are to begin training. Using flags or cones to outline the yard will help them understand where they can and can’t roam.

These boundary markers should be placed two feet apart to ensure they’re always in sight. As your dog becomes accustomed to staying within the marked boundaries, move the indicators further apart until you no longer need them.

2. Utilize a Clicker and Treats

Residential Property SurveyOnce you have placed boundary markers around the property, save one of them for indoor training. Inside your home, utilize a clicker and treats to get your dog used to the indicator. First, place the marker on the floor and let your dog touch it with their nose. Once they do this, click once and reward them with a treat.

Next, place the same marker a few feet away from you, encourage your dog to touch it again, and use the clicker once they complete the task. Your dog will then have to come back to you to receive a treat. This activity teaches them that they should stay away from the boundary marker. Continue this training outside on a long leash.

3. Add Distractions

Once your dog graduates to outdoor training without a leash, add distractions beyond the boundary line. Depending on what they like, you can use food, toys, or even other family members.

If your dog ignores the distraction and stops at the marker, they have been successfully trained. Don’t forget to treat them for their obedience.
