Light fixtures can be a tough item to pack and transport since they are typically fragile and may be irregularly shaped. Using the right packing materials will keep those items safe in transit so they arrive at your new home in pristine condition. Follow the tips below so you can be confident they are well-protected during your move.

A Packing Guide for Light Fixtures

1. Disassemble the Fixture

Whether it’s a ceiling fixture or a table lamp, each part of the fixture should be packed separately. Unplug the fixture and secure the cord into a coil with a twist tie. Unscrew the light bulbs and remove the shade.

If there are any loose pieces, such as screws, place them in a plastic bag and label them so you can match them to the fixture while unpacking. Wipe it all down so it’s free of dust or other debris.

2. Use the Right Packing Materials

Wrap each individual piece in bubble wrap and secure it with tape. Once you place the items into the box, use packing peanuts to fill in the empty spaces. Never place anything on top of a lampshade; it should be at the top of the box.

3. Label the Boxes

If a fixture needs to be divided into different boxes, number or label the boxes so you know what goes together. For example, you’ll need to be able to match each lampshade to its base. Label each box as fragile and use arrows to indicate which side goes up.
