In the summer months, people lose more water through sweat. If you have a senior loved one, take steps to protect them from dehydration, which is a common problem for older adults. The guide below explains why senior caregivers prioritize hydration to keep people safe.

Why Hydration Can be a Problem for Older Adults

While heat and humidity can pose dehydration risks for everyone, seniors are especially vulnerable. The sense of thirst weakens with age, and some medical conditions, such as incontinence, can lead people to avoid drinking liquids.

High blood glucose levels in those with uncontrolled or undiagnosed diabetes heighten the risk of dehydration. Certain medications, including laxatives and antipsychotics, affect the ability to retain water.

Staying hydrated helps seniors avoid long-term complications, such as constipation, kidney stones, bladder infections, mental confusion, and falls.

How to Keep Seniors Hydrated

senior caregiversSenior caregivers should encourage and remind older adults to drink fluids throughout the day, even if they're not thirsty.

Make it easy for them to access beverages by keeping the fridge stocked with cold drinks, such as bottled water, 100% fruit juice, vegetable juice, and herbal teas. Sugary juices and soda raise blood sugar, so it’s best to avoid them.

You can also supply a variety of water-rich fruits and vegetables, including melon, cucumber, celery, berries, and romaine lettuce. Using these ingredients for meals and snacks provides nutrients and hydration.

Advise your loved one to avoid consuming too much caffeine or alcohol, as both have diuretic effects that make the body lose liquids. Look out for warning signs of dehydration, including confusion, dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. If a senior exhibits any of these symptoms, contact a health provider.
