With the 4th of July comes all kinds of festivities that pose a hazard to pets, from parades to firework displays. However, veterinarians can attest that conscientious pet owners have little to worry about. As long as you follow a few simple tips, your furry friends will have a safe and healthy holiday.

3 Pet Safety Tips for Independence Day

1. Keep Trash Out of Reach

If you’re hosting a cookout, you may want to put out a few trash cans for your guests’ convenience; however, make sure all the receptacles are out of your pets’ reach. If you ask a veterinarian what kinds of items most often cause bowel obstructions that require surgery, the answers will likely be those dug out of the trash, like corn cobs and chicken bones.

2. Provide a Quiet Space for Relaxing

veterinariansEven friendly pets who love socializing need a break from time to time. If you’ll be having people over for the 4th, keep at least one room off-limits to guests so your furry friends will have a place to get away from the chaos. Otherwise, they may get agitated as the day wears on, and agitated animals can be unpredictable.

3. Leave Your Pets at Home

Both parades and fireworks shows are highly stressful environments for pets, so don’t bring them. Instead, create a cozy nook for them at home where they can sleep while you’re gone.

If you’ll be out all day, have a pet sitter stop by to provide some stimulation and a bathroom break.

If your pets will be able to hear the artillery or fireworks from your house, ask your vet about sedating them to calm their nerves.
