If you’ve never had an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan before, the procedure may seem intimidating at first, especially if you’re being tested for cancer or another serious health issue. However, by learning about the process, including how to prepare and what to expect, you can feel less anxious and ensure that the MRI is successful. Here’s what you need to know. 

Before the Scan

On the day of the MRI, the radiologist may ask you to make a few preparations. For example, avoid wearing metal, as it can interfere with the equipment. You may need to abstain from eating for one to two hours before the procedure. With less movement in your stomach, the quality of the images will be better. Other times, the radiologist will ask you to only drink water beforehand.

You’ll need to fill out a questionnaire prior to the procedure to give the medical professionals more information about your health. Finally, you’ll be given time to change into a gown. 

During

Once you enter the MRI room, you’ll be asked to lie down. Next, the machine will move around so it’s in the best position to take quality images. At this point, you may hear loud thumping noises. Keep in mind that these sounds are completely normal. However, wearing headphones will help block out the noise. 

Most scans take around 30 minutes to a couple of hours. During the process, all you’ll be required to do is close your eyes and relax. Reducing movement will ensure the images are taken successfully. A professional will be available throughout the procedure to answer any questions and help you feel more comfortable.  

After

Unless a radiologist gave you a sedative, you can go about your normal activities afterward, including walking, driving, and working. If you were given drugs for sedation, however, you won’t be allowed to operate a car. Many patients find it comforting to be driven home by a friend or family member.

The scan will be looked at by multiple medical professionals so you won’t get the results right away. The doctor who ordered the test will go over the MRI with you. If you’re anxious about the scan, ask how long it’ll take to receive the results.
