It always seems to happen at the most inconvenient time: you turn the key in your car’s ignition, and nothing happens. Sometimes, the issue is simple to fix, like you’re out of gas. Other times, there may be more serious problems that require professional auto repair. Learn more about a few potential causes below.

Why Your Car Isn’t Starting

1. Dead Battery

A dead battery is often the reason a car won’t start. Leaving your lights on when you park can drain the battery, but age and wear can also sap the power from your battery. If you turn the key and no indicator lights or sounds come on and the engine doesn’t turn over, then you likely need to replace the battery.

2. Broken Starter

auto repairEvery vehicle is equipped with a starter, which is a small motor that starts the engine. If this part breaks down, your car won’t start.

Sometimes a jump start can give the starter enough power to turn over, but you may have the problem again next time you try to start the car. If you hear a distinct clicking sound when you try to start the car, have an auto repair technician look at your starter.

3. Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter helps keep your fuel lines clear of debris and contaminants that can get into the engine and cause problems. This filter should be changed at least every 12,000 miles and is typically replaced when you bring the car to the auto repair shop for a tuneup.  A clogged fuel filter can cause an array of issues, including stalling. If your car won't start, have the filter checked and replaced if necessary.

4. Broken Ignition Switch

The ignition—where you put in the key to start the car—contains a switch that triggers the engine to start. If the switch malfunctions, the engine won’t start. If you can turn on the lights or your dashboard indicators come on, but the engine doesn’t turn over, there could be an ignition problem. This is a complex auto repair that should be done by a professional.
