Most air conditioners make some noise during operation. However, certain sounds should be taken as a warning that something is wrong with the unit. This allows you to seek preemptive HVAC repairs before a breakdown leaves your home uncomfortably warm this summer.

What AC Noises Require HVAC Repair?

1. Rattling

Unsecured components, such as loosened nuts and bolts, can cause a rattling noise when the unit is operating. In some cases, the noise could be caused by debris like twigs and leaves that have made their way into the outdoor part of the AC.

Usually, these issues are fixed during tune-ups. HVAC contractors will tighten loose parts, change the air filter, and clean the condenser coil. However, you should schedule service sooner rather than later to avoid energy inefficiency.

2. Buzzing

Buzzing usually comes from the outdoor condenser unit. It could be the result of loose components vibrating against each other or a fan blade being unbalanced.

HVACIt could also indicate a more serious electrical issue—with the buzz being the sound made by power discharge. This could stem from a faulty circuit breaker, fan motor, or relay switch. Since electrical issues pose a fire hazard—and are also most typically found in older units in need of imminent replacement—shut your machine down and call an HVAC contractor for an inspection.

3. Grinding

A blower fan helps push the HVAC-treated air through ducts and vents to cool your home. It is attached to a motor by a belt that is meant to be taut. When this belt slips, it leads to a metal-on-metal sound from interacting with other AC components. This can result in your AC not producing air.

4. Whistling

Your AC pulls warm air from the interior of your home and runs it over refrigerant-filled evaporator coils that absorb heat to cool it down. When there is a refrigerant leak, a whistling or hissing noise can be heard as it escapes.

In some cases, this causes the unit to run less efficiently or to cease cooling at all. You may also notice a leak around your machine. Since refrigerant is a dangerous gas to breathe in, schedule repairs as soon as possible.
