Wrought iron gates are extremely durable and corrosion-resistant. If you have these ornamental entrances in your property, you enjoy extra security that can last a lifetime with proper maintenance. Use these tips to keep the metal in top shape over the years.

How to Care for Your Wrought Iron Gates

1. Inspect Them Often

You can recondition a wrought iron gate when you spot rust before it spreads, so inspect the system for signs of corrosion often.

The solid black coating makes rust more visible, but you can also run a gentle cloth over the metal to feel for abrasions or ridges. Use a wire brush or drill with a brush attachment to remove small sections of corrosion. For extensive problems, you may need to have some metal sections replaced.

2. Keep Them Clean

To maintain the coating, clean the gates with mild soap and water at least once a month, but no less than twice a year.

3. Paint As Needed

Paint helps protect the metal against the elements, so inspect the gate for flaked paint each time you clean it. Dirt can scratch the paint, causing it to flake off. In general, you should expect to repaint the gate every two to five years.
