When it comes to choosing a shower or a bathtub for a bathroom remodel, it is important to consider which option is comfortable for you. These days, people are also concerned about water conservation to lower bills and protect the environment. If you are debating between the two fixtures, here is some important information that will help you make a decision and save more water in the future.

Does a Shower or Bath Conserve More Water?

Although most people may automatically think that a shower is always the best option for water conservation, it actually depends on the amount of time you spend in the shower. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the average person uses 2 to 5 gallons of water per minute in the shower, depending on the age and style of the showerhead. On the other hand, it takes 36 to 50 gallons of water to fill a bathtub completely. If you take showers that are more than ten minutes, you may end up using more water than it takes to fill a tub.

Ways to Conserve Water

Bathroom RemodelOne method that you can use to save on water usage with your bathroom remodel is to install a low-pressure showerhead. When it comes to showerheads, the greater the pressure, the more water is used. Older showerheads with higher pressure generally put out 5 gallons per minute, while newer showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute. Installing a low-pressure showerhead can reduce this amount to 2 gallons per minute or less.

You can also take shorter showers. Reducing the amount of time you spend in the shower is an easy way to save water. Since setting a timer on a clock can be mundane, try making a shower music playlist that includes two or three of your favorite songs. Try and finish your shower before or by the time your playlist is finished.

Additionally, you can take baths sparingly to conserve your water usage. If you enjoy taking baths, but you don’t want to constantly overuse water, only take them every once in a while. Also, filling the tub halfway when you treat yourself to a bath can help conserve water.
