Sharing is a tough concept for toddlers. This period of life is developmentally self-focused, and the desires of others are simply not always on your child’s mind. While it is appropriate for toddlers to struggle with sharing with friends and preschool classmates, there are ways to teach them this necessary skill. Below are a few tips.

How to Help Toddlers Share

1. Begin Early

Starting the lessons of sharing early will help them understand its importance. Once a child can pick up and grip a toy, you can demonstrate taking turns, whether their sibling or friend wants to play with it. Even if your child is not verbal yet, repeating “my turn” and “your turn” as well as phrases like “let’s share” reinforces the concept as you pass the item back and forth.

2. Model Behavior

You are your toddler’s first teacher, so they will pick up concepts through your example. Show them how to share on a daily basis, whether it is sharing space on a couch or taking turns when passing a serving dish at dinner. Have them sit with you and share a blanket or have a snack together, equally dividing the pieces.

3. Use Praise

preschoolBe as descriptive and positive as you can when your toddler does share. Instead of generic praise such as “good job,” try pointing out details like how happy their friend was when they shared a toy or how excited you were when they let their playmate take a turn on the playground.

4. Time It Out

Young children sometimes require tangible reminders. During playdates or when they're at home with siblings, set a timer. Instruct them that when the bell rings, it is time to share the toy. Reset the timer so that when it rings again, their friend must return the item back for your child’s next turn. This demonstrates fairness and also that sharing doesn’t mean surrendering—they will get another turn.

5. Make It a Game

Children love games, and turning sharing into one will help them understand the concept. When playing with cars or blocks, divide the pile so you each get the same amount. Take turns racing or building, and be sure to announce whose turn it is in an enthusiastic way. Sharing then becomes a vital step in the game you are playing.
