Excavating a construction site ensures that the future structure will have a strong, stable foundation. Before the project can begin, though, you’ll need to prepare the site. Follow these five steps to get ready for a smooth excavation.

5 Steps to Ready a Site for Excavation

1. Design a Site Plan

You can’t start excavating until you have a detailed site plan that maps out the depth and shape of the excavation. The plan should also depict the future locations of the building, drainage and septic systems, parking lots, and any other important features.

2. Clear the Site

Next, remove obstacles like trees, shrubs, rocks, and buildings. If they remain, excavation won’t be possible. If the site isn’t too big and only features small vegetation, you may be able to clear the site manually with hand tools like chainsaws and machetes. Larger sites and those with lots of obstacles will require heavy machinery such as backhoes and bulldozers.

3. Survey the Site

excavatingSurveying ensures that the excavation and construction crews know precisely where to work. A professional surveyor will use pegs to delineate the exact parameters of where the structure will be placed.

4. Test the Soil’s Density

The soil density will tell you how much weight the site can hold and how well it absorbs water. If the current density can’t accommodate the weight of your planned structure, you’ll need to plan for a lighter structure or choose a new construction site.

Additionally, if the soil doesn’t absorb water well, the site may be at risk of flooding. In that case, you’ll need to either choose a new site or invest in flood-proofing measures, such as raising the planned structure on stilts or piers.

5. Schedule a Geotechnical Site Investigation

A geotechnical site investigation will give you more information about the site’s soil as well as the groundwater and rock. These details will provide a more accurate estimate of how much weight the site can hold.

You can then decrease the size or number of structures you plan to build as well as the size of the construction equipment, if necessary. The investigation will also reveal any potential obstacles, such as unexpected water underground, before you begin construction.
