Most people purchase homeowners insurance for protection, but with the idea that they’ll rarely need to use it. However, claims are prevalent, with 1 in 20 homeowners filing a claim every year. To better protect your home, familiarize yourself with the most common claims.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Homeowners Insurance Claims?

1. Wind & Hail

Most homeowners file claims due to damage from wind and hail. These claims are the most frequent because policies provide ample coverage. Your homeowners insurance will cover wind and hail damage from thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

2. Personal Liability

Homeowners InsuranceIf someone is injured on your property, you can be held accountable for their medical bills, lost wages, treatment, and pain and suffering. To prevent injuries from occurring, make sure your stairs and banisters are sturdy. The sidewalk on your property shouldn’t be damaged. Be sure to lay salt during the winter to keep others from slipping on the icy pavement.

Most homeowners insurance plans cover up to $100,000 in personal liability (including bodily injuries and damage to property). However, that may not be enough if a lawsuit is filed against you. Adding an umbrella policy will substantially increase your personal liability coverage

3. Fire & Lightning

Fire and lightning are bundled together since a lightning strike can easily cause a house fire. Damage caused by fire can be extensive and costly. To decrease the chances of filing a claim, take the necessary fire prevention steps.

Install a lightning rod on the top of your house. It will direct the lightning while minimizing damage.

Do not leave space heaters, candles, or hot plates on when you’re not at home.

Regularly inspect and clean your chimney. Clean your stove as well to prevent grease fires.

Dry Christmas trees also pose a fire risk, so it’s best to keep them away from fireplaces, heating vents, and air registers. Use a tree stand and make sure there’s enough water to keep the tree alive.

4. Water Damage

Have your plumbing checked at least once a year. If pipes need to be replaced, request cast iron, which can last for a century, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can last indefinitely.

Replace the supply hose of your washing machine every five years to prevent flooding. You should also refrain from over-stuffing your washing machine, which will cause gaskets and valves to loosen and crack.

During the winter, pipes can freeze, causing them to leak and burst eventually. You can ask your plumber to insulate the pipes, which will keep them warm.
