If you use your vehicle often, it’s natural to run into transmission issues from time to time. Towing services can assist you if you notice symptoms while driving, but you should be aware of the signs of a faulty transmission to help prevent further damage.

Transmission Problem Indicators

1. Sticking or Lagging Gears

If you’re unable to shift gears properly, or if they switch while driving, the transmission could be at fault. You may also notice a delay when you attempt to put the car in drive—the response from your transmission should be immediate. Anything less is a sign you need to have your transmission looked at by a professional.

2. Leaking Fluid

towingIf you notice pink or red liquid trailing behind your car, you’re likely dealing with a fluid leak. Found in vehicles with automatic transmissions, this fluid helps with lubrication and maintenance. If levels drop too low, the car’s engine will be unable to function. If you’re on the road when you notice a leak, you’ll need to call roadside assistance.

3. Hearing Sounds While in Neutral

When your vehicle is in neutral, it should be almost silent. Since the engine is on, but not engaging with the driveshaft, you shouldn’t be hearing any sounds coming from the car. However, If there is a problem with your transmission, you might notice persistent clunking sounds.

4. Shaking or Grinding

In manual transmissions, if there is a problem with the clutch, you may notice a grinding sound when shifting gears. For automatic transmissions, the car may start shaking when the computer attempts to shift gears for you.

5. Burning Smell

If you notice a burning smell of any kind, there is cause for concern. If the transmission is the source, it could mean it’s running low on fluid or contained the wrong kind. If you smell something burning, get your car looked at as soon as possible by calling a towing service. Otherwise, the transmission problem could grow worse and more expensive to fix.
