A common theme among world religions is the concept of the afterlife. For this reason, those who have passed are memorialized in various ways. If you're attending a funeral service that isn't based around your belief system, learn more about the basics of what to expect below.

Buddhism

In Buddhism, life and death are part of a single cycle, and funeral services are held on the third, seventh, 49th, and 100th day after a person passes. The body or an urn may be displayed during the wake, and chanting from Buddhist monks is often played. Religious leaders will perform last rites and prayers, and guests are asked to wear white rather than black. It's important to sit lower than the monks and to stand when they stand, and you should attend the burial if requested.

Judaism

funeral serviceJewish funerals are generally held within 24 hours after a person passes. There are usually no wakes or visitations, but guests attend a synagogue where religious leaders and family members read eulogies and prayers. No flowers are present during these services, and it's polite to make donations to a charity on the family's behalf instead. Following the funeral, the body is typically buried in a cemetery.

Catholicism

In Catholicism, services begin with a vigil held the night before the funeral. There, guests may take part in prayer ceremonies and share eulogies with a religious leader. The following day, priests will deliver more prayers and speak about the person who has passed during the funeral service. Traditional songs may also be played.

Islam

As with Judaism, Islam requires burial to take place as soon as possible after passing. Guests gather in a room to recite prayers while facing Mecca. Traditionally, only men are allowed to attend the graveside burial, during which wood and stones are piled atop the casket. Mourners then add three handfuls of soil to the grave, and a small stone is placed atop to mark it. The mourning period lasts 40 days, and it's common for friends to provide food and services to the family.
