When you have accumulated too many belongings to fit comfortably in your home and garage, an offsite storage unit is often the best solution. Such facilities provide secure storage and convenient access for the items you don't need every day. For instance, you may have older electronics or duplicate devices that you don't want to part with but which are taking up space. Here are some tips to help you pack these up and store them safely in a rental unit.

How to Prepare Electronics for a Self Storage Unit

1. Remove Batteries

Batteries can discharge over time, once installed. They can also leak acid or cause the device to overheat.

For safety, remove all batteries from your electronics and store them together in a plastic bag. Likewise, remove toner cartridges and eject all CDs, DVDs, or cassette tapes before placing the item in long-term storage.

2. Repack in Original Boxes

Storage Units The original packing that contained your device was designed specifically to protect it while the product was shipped from the manufacturing facility and stored on warehouse and retail store shelves. This makes it the most secure packaging solution for placing the electronic device in storage.

Make a habit of keeping boxes and any packaging that comes with the product. Labeling also makes it easy to identify what each package is when you need to retrieve an item.

3. Use Plenty of Bubble Wrap

If you don’t have the original packaging, cushion the devices with bubble wrap. Place towels or wads of newspaper beneath and alongside heavy or fragile items.

However, be careful of packing newspapers around devices with screens. The newsprint can stain the screens, and the wood fibers in the paper can leave scratches.
