Kindergarten is an exciting step for a little one to take. It provides an opportunity to interact with peers while fully immersing themselves in their education. But it can be a big change for your child to transition from learning at home to a school environment. In anticipation of the first day, use these guidelines to help get your child ready for class.

What Your Child Needs to Know

As far as academics go, your child should know the basics. Recognizing different shapes and naming colors will allow them to participate in group activities. They should also know how to count up to 20 and recite the alphabet. Other skills to focus on include writing their first name, identifying rhyming words, and learning the unique sounds of each letter.

On a more personal note, your child should learn how to play well with others. They’ll contribute to a more productive atmosphere and be less likely to fight over toys. They should also know how to sit quietly and follow directions.

To save the teacher time, your child should be able to put on their jacket and tie their shoes. Make sure they can use the bathroom by themselves and thoroughly wash their hands before returning to class as well.

What You Can Do to Prepare Them

KindergartenMake a habit of including shapes and colors in your child’s regular playtime. Create a game of finding each object, and repeat as often as their attention span will allow.

You can also incorporate counting in everyday activities. Toss a ball back and forth while numbering each catch, or have them count the toys as they clean up before bed.

Any time you have to leave the house, encourage them to put on their own jacket and shoes. Simplify the process by purchasing items with Velcro® straps or zippers.

Plan playdates at least once a week, and try not to hover, so they become accustomed to being apart from you for longer periods. Encourage them to share their toys and participate in cooperative games.
